November 2009 Newsletter

November is already here and we are approaching one of the busiest times of the year.  Thank you all for your participation in the parent-teacher conferences last month.  If you missed your conference for some reason or another, please make sure that you contact your student’s teacher to set up another appointment.

  Attendance line:

Please note that we now have a dedicated attendance line for parents/guardians to call in the morning to excuse a student from school.  If your child is sick or is going to be late for school, please call the attendance line and leave a message.  Please leave your name, your student’s name and grade and the reason why they will not be at school.  Please do this for every day that they are going to be absent, even if it is a few days in a row.  The number to call is 303 629 6562 ext. 14.  Please call and leave the message by 8:00am.

Snow Days/ Late Start

Please remember as per the information in your parent-student handbooks that you received at the beginning of the year, when we have a snow day or a late start day, the information will be on the local T.V. morning news on:

KCNC TV               Channel 4

KMGH                    Channel 7

KUSA TV                Channel 9

FOX 31                  Channel 31

The information will usually be posted on these newscasts and on the station websites by 5:45am.  Please check these stations before you leave home if you are in doubt whether we will have school due to the weather.  If there is nothing posted by 7:00am then you can assume that we have school.

 Winter clothing

When it is cold, please make sure that you send your student to school with a warm winter coat, gloves and a warm hat.  We believe it is important for the children to get some fresh air, even if it is only for a short time, so we will take the students out for recess every day unless it is actively raining or snowing or there is a huge amount of snow on the ground.  Please also let them bring their snow boots if there is snow on the ground, but they should also bring their regular sneakers with to wear inside the building.

If you need help getting a winter coat for your student, please call the school office.

  After school dismissal

Please remember that whoever is picking your student up must be listed on their emergency card, and they must come right into the gym to pick the child up.  Students may not walk out by themselves to meet their ride outside.

Please also make sure that you are teaching your student good road safety habits by using the pedestrian crosswalk to cross the road.  If you are driving along the street, please go slowly and be very aware of students and parents who are trying to cross the road.   Please also do not park your car so that it is blocking the crosswalk, and please do not double park as this is extremely dangerous, there is plenty of parking in the church parking lot.

Thank you for helping us to keep all of our students safe.

  November fundraising events

We have a couple of fundraising events happening this month.  If you love cooking, or you are looking for a special gift for someone that you love, the Pampered Chef fundraising event is just the thing you need.  This will take place in the school gym on Sunday November 15, from 12 – 2pm.  We will also be selling Pastry Puffins just in time for Christmas.  These delicious, easy to bake desserts will be on sale from November 13 until December 1, and will be delivered to school on Tuesday December 15.

Presentation Choir

We are very honored because the Presentation of Our Lady School Choir will be singing at the Seeds of Hope fundraising dinner on the evening of November 13, 2009.  This is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our school in front of many of the major donors to Seeds of Hope.  I would like to thank Mr. Krier and all the choir students for all their hard work preparing for this event.

Printer paper/saving paper/free dress day

We are quickly running out of paper and would like to ask your help.  If your student would like a free dress day, then we have an easy way for them to earn it!  We would like each family to donate 2 packs of white printer paper and in exchange their student/s will then earn a free dress day.  The free dress day will be on November 24, so both packs of paper will need to be brought to school by this date.

We are also thinking of ways to try to save paper.  If you would like the school newsletter and other notices etc. emailed to you instead of having a paper copy sent home, please email me at sandra.howard@presentationdenver.org with your preferred email address, your name and your student/s name/s and grade/s and we will start emailing you information instead.  We will probably start this at the end of November, so please get your information to me as soon as possible.

School Advisory Council

The school advisory council will hold our first meeting on Thursday November 12 at 6:00pm.  If you have any questions or concerns that you would like to have placed on the agenda for us discuss at this meeting please let either myself or one of the board members know before the meeting.  The advisory board members are Steve Gonzales, Ron Trujillo, Dejon Robles, Michelle Perez, Maria Juarez and Tracylynn Trujillo.

 Thanksgiving lunch

We will be having our community thanksgiving lunch on Tuesday November 24.  Parents, grandparents, siblings, parishioners are all welcome to join us for this celebration.  Presentation students eat free, but anyone else can purchase tickets for lunch from the school office.  Tickets will cost $5 for adults and $3 for children under 10.  Please buy your tickets by Friday November 20, so that we can make sure that we have enough food prepared.  Lunch will be served in the gym, and then we will have a 12:45pm dismissal.  We will not have school from Wednesday November 25 through Friday November 27 for our Thanksgiving Break.

Athletic Coaches

All athletic coaches must attend the mandatory training meeting for the Play like a Champion program that we are using this year.  The meeting will take place on Saturday November 14, 2009 from 8:30am – 12:00noon.

Coaches for all sports that we will have for the rest of the year must attend this training, that is basketball, softball, volleyball and baseball.  Even if you have not yet signed up as a coach for one of these sports yet, but would be interested in coaching, you must attend.  Please let Mrs. Elizabeth Moore, our Athletic Director, know that you will be attending this meeting.  She can be contacted at school (303.629.6562 ext. 11) or emailed at elizabeth.moore@presentationdenver.org.

Thank you for making the investment in your child’s future by having them at Presentation of Our Lady School.

May God bless you and your families during this season of thanksgiving.

Mrs. Sandra Howard
